What is a Circuit?

So, if you have a 20 amp breaker it can use a total of 2400 watts?
It’s not quite that simple. Briefly, a 20 amp breaker can handle a load of 2400 watts but over the long term, of say more than an hour, no it cannot. You want to always stay within 10 – 20% below the threshold for the breaker and when it comes to large appliances or electronics you will want them to have their own dedicated circuit.
Let’s say for example, you will have a separate breaker just for the oven in your kitchen. A separate breaker for your air conditioning and a separate breaker for your hot water heater. These three items tend to be the largest gluttons with electricity in a home and due to the amount of electricity that these appliances consume they should be placed on their own circuits.
When it comes to general purpose outlets, let’s say you have a 20 amp breaker and it’s circuit leads to 3 separate bedrooms in a home and controls only the outlets in those rooms. Ideally, you will want to stay under 2000 watts for those three bedrooms. However, if each bedroom has a computer, television, stereo, and other gadgets then this can pose a problem, considering that some computers themselves can draw more than 600 watts or more when playing a computer game. If there is a person in each bedroom, listening to music on their stereo system, with the television on, and playing a computer game, then it’s highly possible that they could trip the breaker for that circuit. So in this scenario the circuit should be a minimum of 25 amps to be safe but when you factor in future scalability then it should really be around 30 – 40 amps.
